In October of 1853 Thales Hasting Haskell was called on a mission to help settle southern Utah and northern Arizona. They also wanted him to befriend the Indians. During this mission his pregnant young wife Hannah Maria Woodbury was killed by an Indian and he went back home to Salt Lake. After marrying 2nd to Margaret Johanna Edwards he returned to southern Utah, and in 1859 was called to go among the Indians again. He kept a diary during that mission - and that diary can be found online among BYU's Mormon Missionary Diaries. That web site also has a nice history of his life - click on "About the Diarists."
He served as a missionary to the Indians until 1886 and after his release he moved his family to Manassa Colorado, where he lived the rest of his life.
