Mrs. W. L. Costley, after enduring poor health for the past year or two, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. Swain, in Asotin, on October 3, 1926. A funeral service was conducted at nine o'clock in Asotin Tuesday morning, by Rev. J. B. York. The remains were then conveyed by automobile, and final funeral services were conducted by Rev. Knox, of the Grangeville Baptist church, the deceased being a pioneer of the Grangeville section.
Mrs. Costley, whose maiden name was Margaret Elizabeth Manning, was born in Madison County, Alabama, on December 3, 1842, being at the time of death 83 years, 9 months and 29 days of age. At the age of three years she moved with her parents to McDonald County, Missouri, where on the 19th day of March, 1867, she was united in marriage to Washington L. Costley. To this union were born seven children, four of whom are now living, namely: Thomas J. Costley, of Portland, Oregon; Sarah E. Kerlee, Grangeville, Idaho; Ida J. Austin, Douthat, Oklahoma; Ada A. Swain, of Asotin. Besides these children, she is survived by one sister, Sarah Asher, of Southwest City, Missouri; and three brothers, Frank and John Manning of Southwest City, Missouri; and J. P. Manning, of Grangeville.
In the fall of 1875, Mrs. Costley with her family, came west to Idaho and settled in the Camas Prairie section, near Grangeville, where her husband died on the 11th of April, 1919, since which time she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. J. Swain, in Asotin.
The deceased was quite well known to many people in Asotin, though her health has permitted her to get around much, but people who were acquainted with her knew her to be a splendid, devout Christian woman, whose heart was filled with love for her friend and neighbors, and charitable towards everyone.
