William Cook was the only son of Giles and Rebecca Cook. He and his two sisters, Margaret and Amanda were born in Rush County Indiana just north of Rushville. At age 18, William, who had no known middle name or initial, joined the 36th Indiana Infantry near Richmond, Wayne Co., In. as a private, and joined forces with General Buell of the union army, to due battle during the Civil war. On April 5th and 6th he was engaged in the "Battle of Shiloh", near Pittsburg Landing, Tn. where he survived and was release several days later for disability (Lung Disease). His adventure is documented at the General William Grose Museum in New Castle, In., Henry County Historical Society.
