Christening records from the church at Boddin, Mecklenburg-Schwerin show Jochim "Ludwig" Gustav Bastian born on 14 December 1805 to Peter Friederich Bastian, schäfer(shepherd)in Boddin, & Anna Elisabeth nee Möller. He was christened on 15 December 1805. His occupation in Germany was as a shepherd.

Ludwig was married on 13 November 1829 at Jordenstorf, Mecklenburg-Schwerin to Sophia Schlorf, daughter of Helmuth Schlorf. He became a widow when Sophia died on 11 December 1852 while delivering their daughter, Lisette.

Ludwig emigrated to Castle Garden, New York, arriving on 20 November 1861 aboard the "Saxonia" settling in New Holstein, Wi. where members of his family had already settled, including his sister Caroline Bastian Wieting, wife of Joachim Wieting.
