Charlie was born on March 10, 1918, in Minneapolis to Anna (Lastufka) and Henry Charles Bush. Charlie's father, Henry, passed away when Charlie was 6 years old. Anna and her three children then moved to Haugen in 1924. In 1927, Anna married Louis Tschernach at St. Joseph's Church in Rice Lake.
Charlie attended Ben Franklin School during his grade school years and later Holy Trinity School in Haugen. Charlie and his brother Arnie moved into Rice Lake to attend high school. Charlie graduated from Rice Lake High School in 1936. He attended Eau Claire Teachers College, and served in the National Guard in Michigan during the summer of 1942. In 1936, Charlie married Eleanor Olson at St. Joseph's Rectory in Rice Lake.
From 1936 to 1948, Charlie and family moved to Rhinelander and Appleton, where he managed shoe stores. In 1948, Charlie and Eleanor moved to Chippewa Falls, where he worked at Clover Dairy delivering milk. In 1950, Charlie took a job at Samuelson's Department Store in Eau Claire selling vacuum cleaners, and later moved into the shoe department. From 1952 to 1966, Charlie was manager and buyer of the appliance and furniture department at Samuelson's. In 1966, Charlie purchased a shoe store in Rice Lake which became known as Bush's Shoes (later to become Bush and Gilles).
Charlie was a brilliant self-made salesman and business owner. In 1967, Charlie and his brother Arnold started Bush Home Furnishings in Eau Claire. In 1976, Bush Warehouse Furniture on Fairfax Street was added. In 1980, Charlie started Bush Furniture in Menomonie. In 1984, furniture was added to Bush and Gilles in Rice Lake. In his later years, Charlie was a landlord and enjoyed visiting his stores, always having time to chat with his employees.
He is survived by his four children, his son, Charles O.
