HINELY: "22 years old when he left his home in Valdosta, Georgia to enlist in the Florida Infantry, C.S.A., earning "Distinguished Service". On July 2, 1863, he was present at Little Round Top, Battle of Gettysburg, where he was wounded in the face and became a POW. On August 23, 1863 Israel was paroled at Baltimore, Maryland. He became a POW again on May 20, 1864 at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia. He was confined at Elmira, New York on May 20, 1864, until he took the Oath Allegiance on July 11, 1865. Israel was 5' 8" with blue eyes, light hair and a fair complexion."
