As a mother, a teacher, and a community volunteer, Susan's life touched many people. Susan was born in Richmond on Oct. 9, 1946, and was a member of Battery Park Christian Church. She graduated from John Marshall High School, where she wrote her class commencement prayer. She attended The College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va., where she received a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature, concentrated on the works of John Milton, and was a member of the Tri Delta sorority. She taught English at a high school in Charlottesville where she met her husband, David Norman Baltimore. Susan and David spent many years living in Marietta, Ga., where they raised their two sons, David Christopher and Scott Elliott Baltimore. Susan worked for the Hospice care-givers group in Marietta, and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church there. She earned a Masters Degree in English Literature from Georgia State University, and was an English professor at Kennesaw State College, and later at Davidson College in North Carolina and the University of North Carolina in Charlotte. As a member of the Davidson College Presbyterian Church, Susan led a Bible study group and was an active community volunteer for the Rain Team which ministered to patients with HIV/AIDS and their families.
Susan is survived by her sons; her grandson, Joshua Elliott Baltimore; her husband, David; her two sisters, Elizabeth Taylor Bagley and Anne Taylor Connelly; and her mother, Michaux Watkins Taylor. She was the daughter of the late Carroll Thornton Taylor of Richmond.
A graveside memorial service for Susan will be held on Saturday, April 4 at the Riverview Cemetery in Charlottesville at 1:30 p.m. The family will receive visitors at the Hill & Wood funeral home in Charlottesville at noon.
