Zack Brunson Sr.
Longtime Destin resident, Zack Brunson Sr., owner of Zack's Bait, died at his home Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000.
He was born on Jan. 9, 1921, at Boggy Bayou, Fla., to Lorenzo D. "Ren" and Sarah Etta Brown Brunson. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, J.D. and J.E. "Cobby" Brunson; and sister, Mabel Brunson Broxson.
Beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, Zack is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Chambless Brunson, and children, Zackery Jr. and Peggy Brunson, son, Scott, Buddy and Freddie Brunson, children, Jeff and Karen, Rikki and Mike Nunnelee, children, Carly and Matthew; Mary Anne and David Liberatore, children, Mikel and JoAnne Adler; Ronny and Pat Brunson, daughter, Ronny Lea; Roger Brunson, Clay Brunson, children, Clay II, Cole and Chase; Debby and Carl Stroud, children, Erica and Jenna; brother, Reddin Brunson and sister, Kathleen Brunson Mikel, and many nephews, nieces and friends.
Mr. Brunson was a commercial fisherman by trade and owner of Zack's Bait in Destin at the time of his death. He served on the board of directors of the Destin Community Center, Destin Fishing Rodeo, and was instrumental in establishing the New Destin Cemetery. He was a member of the Destin Volunteer Fire Department and later served as chairman of the Destin Fire District. Mr. Brunson was a past recipient of the Ross Marler Award for community service.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, at Emerald Coast Funeral Home with Dr. John C. Freidman officiating. Interment will follow in Destin Memorial Cemetery.
The family will greet friends at the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Asked to serve as pallbearers are members of the Destin Fire Department; Chief Tuffy Dixon, James Pate, Dennis Lawson, Jimmy Taylor, Tony Carroll and James Wells. Honorary pallbearers are Jerry Najarian, Howard Horn, Glenn Chance, Dewey Destin, Bill Ming, Tommy Browning, Butch Cheek and Terry Watkins.
Emerald Coast Funeral Home, 113 Racetrack Road N.E., Fort Walton Beach, is in charge of arrangements.
