WALNUT, KS -- Dessie Bass Taylor, 82, of rural Walnut, Kansas, died at 4:55 a.m. Sunday, April 5, 2009, at Prairie Mission Retirement Village in St. Paul, Kansas. She had been in failing health.

She was born May 25, 1926, in rural Stark, Kansas, to Roy and Myrtle (Olson) Bass.

She attended Walnut High School and graduated from Savonburg High School. She attended Chanute Junior College and Pittsburg State University, earning a bachelor's degree in education. Later, she took courses from the University of Kansas.

On Feb. 24, 1946, she married Donald M. Taylor at the Methodist Church in Walnut. They celebrated their 60th anniversary in 2006. He survives of the home.

She began her teaching career in the 1945-46 school year at Schellenbarger Country School. She taught third grade at Erie Elementary School for 33 years, retiring in 1988.

She was a member of Erie Christian Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the American Legion Auxiliary at Walnut, the 8 and 40 and the Red Hattitudes.

Other survivors include two sons, Don Taylor Jr. and wife, Debi, of Erie, KS, and Ken Taylor and wife, Glenda, of Walnut, KS; two daughters, Julia Johnson and husband, Pat, of Erie, KS, and Joyce Fields of Westphalia, KS; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Eleda Bird of Erie, KS.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Robin Buntin; and a sister, Elsie Carlson.

The service will be at Erie Christian Church. Burial will be in Mount Moriah Cemetery north of Stark, KS.

Memorials are suggested to the Dessie Taylor Scholarship Fund and may be left at or mailed to the funeral home, P.O. Box 182, Erie, 66733.

Pierce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Erie, Kansas is in charge of arrangements.
