Thelma Mae Schwab was born in 1897, the second child and oldest daughter of Samuel Valentine Schwab and Videlia McCullough. In 1916 Thelma and Paul August Wenske were married and they resided in Dilworth, Gonzales County. Three years after their marriage, Thelma's mother, Videlia Schwab died in February 1919 during the influenza pandemic, leaving five young unmarried children at the time of her death including a two-month-old infant son, Edward. During the years immediately following Videlia's death, Thelma and Paul Wenske helped care for the younger children, along with Thelma's sister, Verna Schwab Cochran. Thelma and Paul continued to raise the infant (called "Bubba" by family and friends) into adulthood. Paul and Thelma had no other children of their own.

As the oldest daughter, Thelma became the "matriarch" of the family after her mother's death; She hosted many family reunions at her home from the 1940s into the 1980s. During the 1950s, Thelma was well-known for her cake-baking and decorating skills; her beautiful wedding cakes were particularly popular and desired.

Both Thelma and Paul were faithful member of First Baptist Church of Gonzales; Thelma was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, and her husband, Paul was a Mason; Paul also served for many years as a Deacon of the church.

After her husband's death and as Thelma's health declined, she lived with her younger brother, Edward, and his wife, Dana, until her death in 1990 at the age of 92.
