Staff Sergeant Bedford was killed in the crash of U.S. Army Air Corps B-24D Liberator #42-40242 into the mountains eight miles northwest of San Bernardino, California.


After departing March Field, near Riverside, California, the bomber suffered a catastrophic failure of the tail section and crashed into a steep ravine near the Devore Station on the Cajon Pass. All five airmen aboard were killed.


Based with the 30th Bomb Group, 27th Bomb Squadron, March Field, California.
