Phyllis Elizabeth Westcott Strickland Head. Native of Hampden Highlands, Maine, she later became a native of Soap Lake, Washington, then Browning, Montana.
Phyllis was the Step-Daughter of Lewis S Stubbs and Daughter of Margaret Abby Westcott Stubbs of Winterport, Maine, who were married 10 July 1931.
Lewis Simeon Stubbs was the son of Simeon A(1866) and Emma Stubbs(1869) of Maine. There were six siblings: Ernest E Stubbs(1891 - 1979), Stella M Stubbs(1897 - 2002), Lewis S Stubbs(24 Feb 1901 - 28 Sep 1999), Frank Stubbs(1904), Everett W Stubbs(1906) and Charles Stubbs(1909).
Barden James "Pete" Strickland Jr and Phyllis Elaine Westcott Strickland Head were married in Hampden, Maine, 03 October 1947.
BANGOR, 27 SEPTEMBER: Mr and Mrs Lewis S Stubbs of Hampden Highlands are announcing the engagement of their daughter, Phyllis Elaine, to Cpl Barden James Strickland Jr, of Mr and Mrs Barden James Strickland Sr of Brunswick, Georgia. The wedding will take place in the near future. Miss Westcott attended Hampden Schools and is now employed in Bangor, Maine. Corporal Strickland attended schools in Cedartown, Georgia and served four years in the US Navy as gunner's mate 3rd Class. He is now stationed at Dow Field, Bangor, Maine.
Their children were (1)Robert Strickland(Adopted Name Robert "Bobby" Pettersen), Born Bangor, Maine, 1947, lived in Orcas Island, WA; and (2)Kimberly Petterson of Orcas Island, Wa. The adopted parents were Pete and Mary Pettersen of Orcas Island, Washington. Pete(1915-1985) was a Tugmaster and Mary(1913-1977) was the town Postmaster.
(3)Barden James Strickland III, Born Bangor, Maine, October 1949. Adopted by his Uncle Doyce Tunney Strickland, and Aunt Lois Strickland of Georgia. (4)Joseph Edward Strickland, Born Biloxi, Mississippi in September 1950, Adopted by his Uncle Doyce Tooney Strickland, and Aunt Lois Strickland of Georgia. He later was re-adopted and changed his name to Joseph Michael Smith in 1967. He died in 1982.
(5)Baby Female Strickland (Adopted at birth by Alma Odegaard Bender and Everett Samuel Bender, was named Elanne Joy Bender, Born Soap Lake, Washington 19 Nov 1951. (6)Margaret Ann Strickland adopted name Margaret Ann Bender), Born in Moses Lake, WA, at Moses Lake Air Force Base, WA in 1952. She came to live with the Benders at the age of 18 months, and was adopted by the Benders, at the age of 8.
OBITUARY: Phyllis Elaine Westcott Strickland-Head, 67, a retired practical nurse, died after a long battle with cancer on July 2, 1996 at the local hospital. Memorial services have been held at the Blackfeet Funeral Chapel. She was born April 26, 1929, in Hampden Highlands, Maine, and grew up there.
In 1957, she married George Head in Butte, Montana and they moved to Browning. She worked as a licensed practical nurse and home health care provider. She was preceded in death by her mother, Margaret Ann Stubbs and her brother, John Stubbs. Survivors include her husband, George of Browning; an adopted daughter, Rita Turner of Oklahoma City and one grandchild. Blackfeet Funeral Chapel handled arrangements.
NOTE: No mention is made in the Obituary concerning the other Six children she had. Five of the Six children were taken away from her by the State of Washington, one other was given up for adoption.
Her father, was the late Lewis S Stubbs of Winterport, Maine; four sisters, the late Florence Izaijs of Eddington, Maine who passed away on 6 September 2007, Marilyn Cope of New Hampshire, Norma L Taylor of Olympia, Washington, and Juanita Philbrook of Rockport, Maine.
