Charles Henry Ockenden, was my Great Grandfather.

Born on 17th June 1859, Ninfield, East Sussex.

He was the oldest of 6 children (4 boys & 2 girls)
born to Robert William Ockenden (1839-1923) &
Jane Martin (1834-1901)

His siblings were:
William (1866)
George (1868-1957)
Jane (1871)
Alfric/Elphick (1873) &
Elizabeth (1876-1901)

In 1880, Eastbourne, East Sussex,
he married his 1st wife, Eliza Kirby (1851-1916)

They had 6 children.
Ellen (1880)
Ada (1883)
Charles Henry (my Grandfather, 1885-1971)
Alice (1888-1983)
Alfred (1890-1963) &
Elizabeth (1893-1917)

The 1881 UK census shows him aged 22, Gardener,
living with wife & daughter, Ellen,
at Mount Pleasant, Bexhill on sea, East Sussex.

The 1901 UK census shows him living in Ninfield, East Sussex.

After Eliza died in 1916, he met and married his second wife,
Mary Hariett Maude Eldridge (k/a Maude, 1884-1971)
on 17th April 1918, Battle, East Sussex.

Sadly his children did not approve of the marriage as Maude
was 25 years his junior.

They had a very happy marriage, which produced 3 daughters.
Twins, Molly (1919-1992)
& Lilian, (1919 - 2013) &
*Anora Josephine Ockenden (k/a Jo).(1923 - 2009)

He worked as a Market Gardener, and died
on 27th January 1933, Ninfield, East Sussex.

He is buried at Ninfield Church graveyard, East Sussex.

***********************************************************

Sadly my Father never got to meet his Grandfather's second family.
He was told that he had cousins living in Ninfield,
in the cottage where he was born.
When I started researching the family tree in 1999, I sent a letter to his "cousin" Jo Ockenden.
I later went to meet my half Great Aunt, and thus the story of Great Granddad's second family unfolded.
Jo is actually, my Father's half Aunt.
He would have loved her, as much as my family & I do!
When she talks about her Father, she is talking about my Great Grandfather, and my children's Great Great Grandfather!
Like me he shares the knick name of "Ockie"

***********************************************************

Dear Ancestor,
Your tombstone stands among the rest;
Neglected and alone.
The name and the date are chiseled out
On polished, marbled stone.
It reaches out to all who cares
It is too late to mourn.
You did not know that I exist
You died and I was born.
Yet each of us are cells of you
In flesh, in blood, in bone.
Our blood contracts and beats a pulse
Entirely not our own.

Dear Ancestor, the place you filled
One hundred years ago
Spreads out among the ones you left
Who would have loved you so.
I wonder if you lived and loved,
I wonder if you knew
That someday I would find this spot,
And come to visit you.
