Henry Withington (Whithington, Whithenton) came on the JAMES to Boston in 1635 with his wife, Elizabeth, and four children. He was one of the first seven signers of the covenant of the First Parish (North) Church of Dorchester in August of 1636 and an "elder" of the church for 30 years. In 1636, he was a selectman. He was a blacksmith by trade.

He purchased, 23 Apr. 1638, the house in Dorchester formerly owned by my ancestor, MATTHIAS SENSION (or ST. JOHN), who removed from Dorchester to Windsor, Conn. Henry Withington and my ancestor, THOMAS DICKERMAN, signed their names December 12, 1641 to a document assigning the use of profits from sale of land to the maintenance of the school & school master.

The will of "Henry Withington, of Dorchester, in New England, being about the age of 76 yeares or upon 77" dated November 8, 1664 names his son, Richard, executor. He mentions "Margerie" (his wife), sons: John, Ebenezer, Henry & Phillip, daughters: Faith Baker, Mary Danforth, and Anna Batte, and son-in-laws: Thomas Danfort, & James Battie; and grandchildren: John Baker, Samuel Batte, Samuel Paul, Samuel Danforth & Mary Robinson. He left 5 pounds each to Mr. Mather and Mr. Tomson, and 10 pounds to be distributed by the Deacons to the poorest inhabitants of Dorchester.

The inventory of his estate taken March 6, 1666/7 by John Capen Sr. & William Sumner was valued at 850 pounds, 17 shillings, and 3 pence which included half of a warehouse in Boston & two shares in the iron works at Taunton.

Henry Withington married (1) Ann Leech in 1615 in Leigh, Lancaster, England. They were the parents of Faith & Richard Withington. He married (2) Elizabeth Smith on September 20, 1622 in England. Two of their children were Ann and Mary Withington. He married (3) Margaret Turner Paul on June 5, 1662 in Dorchester, Colony of Mass.
