Civil War Union Brevet Major General. A native of Pennsylvania, Wilhelm was commissioned into the Union army in December of 1861 as a Captain in command of Battery H, 2nd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery. In November 1862, he was promoted to the rank of Major. In April 1864, he was promoted to Colonel and given command of the newly formed 2nd Pennsylvania Provisional Heavy Artillery. On June 2, 1864, Col. Wilhelm was minorly wounded in the foot during action at the Battle of Cold Harbor. In 1865 he was mustered out of service but later re-commissioned as a Captain in the 7th Veteran Reserve Corps until war's end. For his services during the war, he was brevetted Brigadier General of Volunteers, Major General of Volunteers, and Brigadier General of U.S. Regulars on March 3, 1869. After the war, he reverted in rank to Second Lieutenant and was assigned to the 8th Infantry Regiment. He would continue to serve in the army until his retirement at the rank of Major in 1899 and would later serve as a staff officer in the California National Guard.
