Benjamin A. Oliver, a member of a Beloit pioneer family who was born September 28, 1863, at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Washington Oliver, 909 Brooks Street, Beloit, Rock County, Wisconsin, a house still occupied by a brother and several sisters, died suddenly Saturday, January 8, 1949, at his home in Racine, Racine County, Wisconsin. He is said to have been in his usual health until taken with a heart attack.
Mr. Oliver grew up in this city (Beloit) and attended the schools here. During the Klondike Gold Rush, in 1898, he and his brother George Oliver of this city, went to Alaska where they stayed for a year with an uncle, Alfred Henry Mayo, at Rampart City. During this time they experienced the excitement of that stirring era. In his early days he was employed by American Express Co. of Beloit. Its' offices were shared by Beloit Telephone Co. and he eventually became manager of the Telephone office, remaining for quite a long period before going to Janesville as manager and then to Racine, where he became a district manager. He was also at one time a representative of the New York Insurance Co. and continued to follow that work when retiring from telephone work.
He married, date unknown, to Mabel Powers of Beloit, who died many years ago.
Survivors are two daughters: Mrs. Orin Stearns, Racine, and Mrs. R. W. Dennis, Milwaukee: two sons, Joseph Oliver, of Racine and Donald, Chicago, Illinois. There are five grandchildren, also four sisters, the Misses Lenora and Tenie Oliver, and Mrs. E. R. (Minnie) Newton, Beloit and Mrs. A. E. (Gerturde) Peet, Long Beach, California: two brothers, Charles and George of this city.
Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Tuesday in the Wilson funeral home in Racine where burial will take place.
