Another of the veterans of the War between the States, was called to the final camping ground when Thomas O. Besley, of Calhoun, passed away Tuesday morning after being confined to his bed for more than a week.

Mr. Besley, who was approaching his 89th birthday, was remarkably active and alert until his last illness. He was born in 1841. He had been a harness maker at Calhoun after working here with the late Chris Hasler.

He was born in Lawrence County and at the beginning of the Civil War entered the Union Army and served throughout the conflict. He was a member of The Christian Church.

Mr. Besley is survived by two daughters, Mrs. George Casad of Olney and Mrs. Mode Jones of California and two sons, Paul of Seattle, Washington, and William who lives in Idaho.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vasti, who died in 1891.

Funeral services will be conducted this afternoon at the residence in Calhoun with burial at Haven Hill.

From obituary in The Olney Advocate Thursday, April 25, 1929.

Suggested edit: I believe his correct middle initial should be 'J' not 'O.' Regimental and federal records of the 42nd IN infantry list it as 'J.' Also I believe the correct last name to be 'Besly' (as his headstone indicates). In this case, however, the regimental records incorrectly record him as 'Besley.'
