The Howell Co., Gazette, Thursday September 8, 1904, carried the story of a death which was close to the hearts of Hutton Valley folks: Died, Thursday September 1st, Alma Ogle Smith, beloved wife of Henry A. Smith, aged 31 years.
The death of Mrs. Smith, which occurred at the home of her mother, Mrs. Ogle, near Hutton Valley, has caused much sorrow and grief among her friends and relatives. When the news reached this city it came in the nature of a shock for when Mrs. Smith left here a week ago on a visit to her mother she apparently was in good health. Directly after reaching Hutton Valley she became ill and Dr. Rowe reached her bedside and assisted in allaying her suffering, but when Dr. Spears arrived Mrs. Smith had been dead for ten minutes.
Several months ago Mrs. Smith was suffering from a tumor and went to Kansas City and had an operation performed. After her return she seemed much improved. When taken ill at Hutton Valley it was at first supposed that the former trouble had returned, but the attending physicians concluded that the fatal illness was an attach of appendicitis.
The remains were brought to West Plains Friday. On Saturday afternoon funeral services were held at the family residence on West Main Street, conducted by Elder N.C. Epps, pastor of the Hutton Valley Baptist church of which the deceased was a devout member, assisted by Rev. J.S Conner, of this city.
The remains were interred in Oak Grove Cemetery. The deceased leaves a husband and two boys besides a mother, sister and brothers, all of whom have the tenders sympathies of the public.
