CASHMERE - Mabel Auvil Abbott, 95, a longtime resident of Chelan County, died Saturday afternoon, Jan. 27, 1996, at the Cashmere Convalescent Center.

She was born Nov. 13, 1900, to Llewellyn and Ida Rebecca (Ashworth) Auvil at Avondale, W.Va. In 1908, she moved with her family to Monitor, where she attended school for a time before moving to Entiat. While living in Entiat, she attended school and graduated from Wenatchee High School in 1918. After graduating, she attended Bellingham Normal School where she received her teaching certificate. She began her teaching career in 1920 and taught one year near Republic and then one year at Ollala Canyon School.

Mrs. Abbott married Basil Abbott June 30, 1921, at Entiat. Following their marriage, the couple farmed on their ranch at Ollala Canyon for several years. In the late 1930s, the couple moved to Dryden. Mrs. Abbott worked as the librarian at the public library in Dryden for several years until her retirement in 1968. The couple then moved to Orondo for five years and returned to Cashmere in 1972. They spent the next 12 years gardening and camping.

She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church of Cashmere. She was also a member of Cashmere Grange No. 380, Chelan County Pomona Grange, a charter member of the Dryden Improvement Club, a 50-year National Grange Gold Sheaf member and the American Legion Auxiliary of Cashmere.

Survivors include a daughter, Ida Wheeler of Cashmere; a son, Richard Abbott of Spokane; a brother, Grady Auvil of Orondo; a sister, Myrtle Mulvihill of Spokane; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 30 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1987, two sons, Ed and Woody, one daughter, Florence, two grandsons, Brian and Pat, and by three brothers, Robert, Donald and David.

Arrangements are by Braun Funeral Home of Cashmere.
