Born in New York, James Arlington Bennet was proprietor and principal of the Arlington House, an educational institution on Long Island. Usually remembered as Joseph Smith's first choice as Vice-Presidential running mate in the 1844 Presidential election.
Stone reads "Author of Bennett's Book Keeping & Other Works. Also Founder of Washington Cemetery."

Attorney, newspaper publisher, educator, author.3 Born in New York.4 Married first Sophia, ca. 1811.5 Served as third and later second lieutenant in First U.S. Artillery, 1 Aug. 1813–14 Oct. 1814.6 Published American System of Practical Book-keeping, 1824, with subsequent editions printed until 1855.7 Lived in New Utrecht/Gravesend, Kings Co., New York, by 1830.8 Published Brooklyn Advocate and Nassau Gazette, 1832–1836.9 Awarded honorary doctor of laws degree, 22 Apr. 1842, from University of Nauvoo.10 Appointed inspector general of Nauvoo Legion, Apr. 1842.11 Founded Arlington Academy, 1843, at New Utrecht.12 Baptized into LDS church by Brigham Young, 30 Aug. 1843, at Coney Island, Kings Co., though did not participate actively in church.13 Invited to run for U.S. vice presidency as JS’s running mate, 1843; invitation withdrawn because of misunderstanding regarding Bennett’s supposed birth in Ireland.14 Married second Julia Helen Berkeley, 30 Dec. 1851.15 Lived with Margaret Curtin, 1852–1863.16 Died in Brooklyn, Kings Co.

BENNETT On Friday. Dec. 25th, of gout in the stomach. General James Arlington BENNETT, In the 76th year of his age. The friends and acquanintances are respectfully invited to attend the funeral from his late residence, 175 Fulton av., on Sunday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, without further notice.
