Chapter Four: Joseph Miram Anderson

The inclusion of Joseph M. Anderson as a son of Robert and Betsy may surprise many readers, since few current relatives, if any, recall his name. The first clue concerning such a possibility was the 1850 Porter Co., IN. census (Pleasant Twp.), where the Robert Anderson family included a Joseph M. (5 years old, born in Ohio) between children Samuel and Margaret.
Next, the editor discovered in an old birthday book owned by his mother the name of Joseph Miram Anderson, b. 13 Apr. 1846 (admittedly, that would make him only four years old at the time of the census, but a census has been wrong before).
Finally, while making a return visit to Adams Cemetery in Morgan Twp. of Porter Co., IN., the editor discovered a couple of small tombstones (children?) far away from the rest of the Anderson family (it is not uncommon for cemeteries to have a special section for the graves of infants). The inscription reads:
Joseph M. Anderson, s/o R. & E. d. 7 Jan 1853 at __ -8 - 25d (hard to decipher)
At first I thought it indicated a death at 2 years plus, but upon closer examination it could be read as 6 years. Going back to the birthday book, if he lived 6 years, 8 months, 25 days, the birthday book and the cemetery dates would fit exactly. Almost certainly, then, the parents listed "R. & E." refer to Robert and Elizabeth ("Betsy") Anderson, and the 1850 census data is confirmed, but age 4.
Interestingly, also living with Robert Anderson in 1850 was his brother Joseph Anderson, age 35. So, presumably, little Joseph was named after his uncle who shared the same house until he married a year or two later. The data on Robert's fourth son can be listed as follows:
JOSEPH MIRAM ANDERSON b. 13 Apr 1846 (presumably Trumball Co., OH) d. 7 Jan 1853 Porter Co., IN.; bur. Adams Cem.

(Additional note: assuming that the handwriting in the birthday book was accurate in spelling Joseph's middle name as "Miram", the editor has no knowledge of where such a name might arise. Since he parents of Robert Anderson have never been discovered, one is left to wonder if it was a family name somewhere back in history.)
