Master Corporal, November Company, 3 Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment, based in Petawawa, Ontario. Aged 28, he was from Sault Ste. Marie, ON. He was deployed with the Canadian contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

He and Cpl Tyler Crooks were killed, and five others wounded, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their patrol in the Zhari District approximately 40 kilometres west of Kandahar City. Also, a local Afghan interpreter was killed and another injured. The incident happened about two hours before two soldiers died and three were injured by a roadside bomb in Shah Wali Kot District.

MCpl Vernelli enlisted in January 2000 and was awarded the General Campaign Star (ISAF). He was on his third tour of Afghanistan and due home within a few weeks. He was remembered for his sarcastic but genuine sense of humour, impeccable sense of style, terrific athleticism, cooking skills and his passion for family and friends. An ardent Boston Bruins fan, he also played goaltender on the base hockey team at Petawawa. Scott is survived by his wife Cpl Marcie Lane and their infant daughter Olivia, parents Chuck and Ruth, brother Sean (wife Carrie and children) and extended family.

Funeral Service with Military Honours held on Monday, March 30, 2009 in St. Francis of Assisi Chapel, CFB Petawawa.

The deaths bring to 116 the number of Canadian military fatalities in the Afghanistan conflict since 2002. One diplomat and two aid workers have also died.
