Aged: 80 years.
Mr. Robert A. Elliott, one of Chariton County's oldest and best known citizens, died at the home of his son, Wilson Elliott, in this city, Tuesday afternoon, October 27, 1908, following an illness of about three weeks. Funeral services were conducted at the home Thursday at 10 o'clock by Rev. C. O. Ransford, pastor of the Methodist church, assisted by Rev. W. J. Parvin, of Maryville, formerly pastor of the Methodist church here. The remains were taken to Hazel Ridge Cemetery, 4 miles north of town, for burial.
Robert A. Elliott was born in Campbell County, Virginia, July 16, 1828. At the age of nine years, he came with his parents to this county, settling on a farm about three miles north of Brunswick, and has made his home here ever since. He was engaged in farming nearly all of his life.
Mr. Elliott was one of a class of citizens who are rapidly passing away. Born in a time when advantages were few, he had the opportunity of seeing the United States grow from infancy to the greatest nation on the globe. He saw the country grow from a land of log cabins and small farms to a land of great mansions and broad acres. Through his long and useful life he took advantages of his surroundings a remarkable fund of information and experience. He was a man of a warm and genial nature and made friends where ever he went.
In 1851 Mr. Elliott was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Crockett McCoy, and to their union five children were born, three of whom, Mr. Wilson Elliott and Mrs. Ora Hamilton, of this city, and Wise Elliott, of Kingman, Kansas, survive. Mr. Elliott's wife died about thirty years ago.
In early manhood Mr. Elliott became a member of the M. E. Church, South, and through all his long life he was known as an earnest, true and conscientious Christian. Everyone said of a truth that "Grandpa" Elliott was a good man. He leaves in the hearts of his friends a memory which will never die, and goes to live with those who have gone to receive their reward of everlasting life.
