"Agnes on Her 82nd Birthday"
by James Renwick Jackson, Jr.

eighty-two years old
this Saint Patrick's eve
when celebration of Irish things begins
you are, and have been always
a lyrical celebration
through nine decades of life's pain and joy

like Moses
your eye undimmed
vigor unabated
you continue to radiate health and open spirit
giving to grandchildren what you gave to us
strong affirmation to choose our special paths

more than encouragement
you are a model
young striking beauty seasoning to older grace
a helping compassion
a resilient strength
still growing greener exploring your frontiers
