Lou than went to college at Minnesota to play football. He was drafted in 1938 by the Pittsburgh Pirates of the NFL. Lou played for Pittsburgh in 1939; in 1940 he played for the Green Bay Packers. He played at tackle and guard for Pittsburgh and Green Bay. He wore Number 27 for the Packers.
Lou was in the US Navy for WW2 with the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
