US Congressman. He was raised in Charleston, graduated from the College of Charleston, studied law with Robert Goodloe Harper, attained admission to the bar in 1799, and became an attorney in Pinckneyville in 1800. He served in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1802 to 1817, and was a member of the South Carolina College (now University of South Carolina) Board of Trustees from 1809 to 1821. Gist was commonly referred to as Colonel, most likely because he served on the military staff of Governor Charles Pinckney, or on the staff of Major General Thomas Pinckney during the War of 1812. In 1820 he was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Democratic-Republican, and he was twice reelected as a Jacksonian, serving from 1821 to 1827. He did not run for reelection in 1826 and returned to Pinckneyville, where he practiced law until his death.
