He resided in Watonwan County, Minnesota prior to the war.

B-17G #43-38057 took off, with a crew of 9, from England on a mission of Tactical Support of Ground Troops near Metz, Germany. Shortly after takeoff B-17G #43-38057 was involved in a mid-air collision with B-17 #43-37666 piloted by 1st Lt. Robert W. Davis. Both B-17s crashed near Wenlock, Shropshire, England.

John was "Killed In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.

He was originally interred in England and was later repatriated here on August 9, 1948.
