According to the 1864 Census for reorganizing the Georgia Militia, Burrell was born in North Carolina. The 1850 and 1860 Censuses list him as born in Georgia. From 1802 until 1819 his father, Thomas Ivie, is listed as living in Franklin County, Georgia. By the 1820 Census, Thomas was living in Habersham County, Georgia (created 1818).

Burrell Ivie and Christian Ritch were married 10/5/1834 in Habersham County, GA. They had the following children: William Wilson Ivie married Eliza Cossander Taylor, Mary Ann Ivie married William Henry Hardy, Sarah Elizabeth Ivie married Alonza Wayne "Squire" Harper, Milton Green Ivie married Sally Lou Watson, Martha Jane Ivie, Nancy Emiline Ivie, Adelaide Florence Ivie married George Robert Shirley, Thomas Judson Ivie married Sarah Jane Kinney, Charles Ritch Ivie married Martha Jane Morris, and James Hampton Ivie married Ellen E. Potts.
