In 1850 Alexander is 23 and living in Perry Twp., with his wife Mercy D Wilson.
In 1860 Alexander is still in Perry Twp., and the couple has added two children: Louisa, 5 and Brisis 1.
By 1870 the census lists Alex E, farmer, with wife Mercy and children: Nancy E 15, Brisis 11, Allrilla 9, and George 6. Some of the names have been altered slightly.
My mystery is the switch from Andrew to Alex. My great grandfather is his son, George Elliott VanGorder. On George's obit it lists his father as Andrew Alexander.
Mercy died suddenly of consumption in 1880. The census of that year shows E. Andrew 53, living with his parents Jacob and Nancy Van Gorder in Perry Twp., Lawrence CO., PA.
Sometime between 1847 and 1886, I suspect closer to 1886, Andrew Alexander was injured after a fall and appears to have had a brain injury. His fathers Will provided for "the care and comfort" of Andrew E VanGorder and also provided payment to the Slippery Rock Presbyterian Church for his burial. His obituary states he died in Warren, Pa at the Warren State Hospital and was "insane". The funeral was at the Slippery Rock Presbyterian Church. The church has no records dating back that far but I suspect with much certainty after the above documentation that Andrew is buried with his wife Mercy and no inscription was ever made to the existing headstone.
