Born in England, the trail which led John Bostock to Alabama is unknown, but he apparently became a prominent and well-known citizen in the little town of Dadeville. He was a Clerk of Court and Register in Chancery at the courthouse, and owned seven slaves.

On March 22, 1840, he, along with a man named Rezin E. Mabry, purchased Fractions B, C, and D of Section 36, T20 R21, having on them the Sanders Ferry. This ferry service was located on the Tallapoosa River, downstream from present-day Martin Dam. The name was later changed to the Double Bridges Ferry
