R.W. Burkhardt Taken By Death
Robert W. Burkhardt, 58, of 24 North Twenty-third Street, a blacksmith helper at the Monon shops, died suddenly of a heart attack at 6:30 o'clock Monday morning while starting a fire in a forge at the shops. Coroner H.E. Klepinger investigated and the body was removed to the Soller-Baker Funeral Home.
Born in Lafayette September 13, 1878, he was a son of George and Elizabeth Burkhardt. He married Mary M. Rohler June 16, 1907. For 30 years he was employed as a blacksmith for the John Leuther Blacksmith Company, but in 1924 went to work at the railroad shops. He was also an expert in the making of violins and his reputation in this art attracted widespread attention.
Survivors are the widow and three sons, Robert R., Lesley W., and Dewey N., at home, two brothers Charles and Christ, Lafayette, and four sisters, Mrs. Grover Cruthers, Monticello, Mrs. Elizabeth Mosten, Chicago, Mrs. Carl Kurtz and Mrs. George Bushman, Lafayette. He belonged to the blacksmiths' union.
The body was taken to the family home where friends may call after 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence; burial in Rest Haven.
