Son of Abijah Ayres Jr. and Thurza Palmer, born in Canton, Bradford, Pennsylvania. He worked as a farm hand in Gaines, Kent, Michigan, where he met Madgalena Clemens. They were married on 4 November 1880 in Grand Rapids, Michigan at First (Park) Congregational Church by the Rev. J. Morgan Smith. They later moved to Grand Rapids. He was the father of Othello Burton Ayres and Thurza Lillian Ayres. After Magdalena's death he remarried. His second wife was Miranda Waldo; they were married on 18 July 1913 at Williamston, Ingham, Michigan, by the Rev. C. E. Robinson.

Monument ordered 03/13/1930 by his daughter Lillian Ayres.

His obituary in Grand Rapids Herald, December 11, 1929, reads: "Burton S. Ayers, lifelong resident of Grand Rapids, died Monday morning at Lansing. Mr. Ayers, who was employed by the Heyman Furniture company for many years, was a member of the Maccabees. He is survived by a daughter, Lillian Ayers of Grand Rapids. The body will be returned from Lansing tonight and is to be taken to the Berton A. Spring chapel, where funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment is to be in East Gaines cemetery."
