Isaac Thomas (Tom) Goodnight was born near Mansfield, Texas on April 10, 1858 to Mr. and Mrs. Isaac S. Goodnight, a leather tanner who supplied leather to the Confederate troops during the Civil War.

On July 1, 1880, Tom Goodnight married Grace Cowans, the oldest daughter of William and Christina Thomson Cowans. They were the parents of nine children: Louann, Mary Lea, Robert Henry, Isaac Thomas, Jr., Christina Jane, John Benjamin, Grace Edith, Viola and Walter Hayden.

The lure of a healthier climate in the Panhandle lead Tom and Grace and family to move there in 1890. He gave the land for the Friendship Baptist Church and served as school trustee of Mt. Olive, later known as Buck Creek. He died August 21, 1944.
