Nathaniel married Mary Margaret "Polly" Hudson on September 2, 1814, in Elbert County.
Mary died November 4, 1831, in Montgomery County, AL. They had at least one son, William David Barnett, also buried at Marks Mill cemetery, and at least one daughter, Mary Meriwether Barnett Marks, who was the 1st wife of John Harvie Marks, Jr., and is also buried at Marks Mill cemetery.
Nathaniel was one of Edinburg's first citizens. During the Civil War, local citizens hid their valuables underneath his large marble marker so they would not be found by Union soldiers.

William Barnett was born Mar. 4, 1761 in VA. and was a US Congressman in GA., and later was a member of the Alabama State Legislature. Mary Meriwether was born about 1766 in GA. They married Mar. 8, 1785 in VA or GA.
