TRAGIC DEATH
Ed Hubbard, Republican nominee for Sheriff of Lincoln county, shot to death M. S. Baughman, Democratic nominee for the same office, at 10 o'clock Monday morning. The killing occurred just in front of the First National Bank in the midst of a large Court day crowd.

Baughman was shot three times in the head and death was almost instantaneous. Ill-feeling had existed between the two men for some time and it reached white heat this morning when Hubbard distributed among the Court day crowd a printed circular headed, "Was He Right?" in which Hubbard sets forth Baughman's expense account, as filed for the primary.
Hubbard was distributing these bills in the First National Bank Monday morning when Baughman came in and asked him if he (Hubbard) meant to intimate that he had lied. Hubbard replied by saying that he did not mean to intimate anything, but that records would show themselves.

S. H. Baughman, a brother of the dead man, was with him at the time and they walked out on the street together. What words passed between them at this time were not overheard, but Hubbard was seen to motion Baughman away from the front of the bank. Baughman walked about ten feet until he was directly in front of the Penny drug store. Hubbard then went out in the middle of the street and began firing. Hubbard gave himself up to Sheriff J. G. Weatherford and Deputy W. S. Dryer drove him to another county.

Mr. Baughman was one of the best known men in Lincoln county, and was a member of a prominent Central Kentucky family. He had served as Sheriff once before and was the successful Democratic candidate in the last primary.
He is survived by a widow, who was Miss Effie Dunn of Danville, and by five children.
