MSgt Bauchmann was a Korean War Veteran of over eighteen years of service with the US Marine Corps having last reenlisted on February 24, 1962 in San Diego CA. In Vietnam he served with H&S Company, 2d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.
On September 19, during Operation Prairie in northern Quang Tri Province the Battalion CP which was located in the Cam Lo River Valley northwest of Highway 9 was with a barrage of 32 rounds of 82 mm enemy mortar fire. The hostile mortar fire killed two Marines, one of the casualties was MSgt Bauchmann as a result of multi fragmentation wounds.
