Son of Zacharias Coffin and Phebe Starbuck; he married his first wife Matilda Walker on Oct. 1, 1833, in Guilford County, North Carolina. They had three sons, all of whom served in the Union Army during the Civil War. Matilda died on Aug. 13, 1871. He married his second wife, Mary Blessinger, on Nov. 17, 1879.
