In 1896, with his parents and siblings, Ralph Brown moved to Georgia. About a year later, the family floated down the Chattahoochee River on barges to Florida, where the family was one of the original settlers of Eastpoint FL.
Around 1914, he met his future bride, Gertrude Birdsall, while she was visiting Eastpoint. (They were second cousins.) About a year later, after she returned to Purcellville, Virginia, Ralph moved to Washington DC to be closer to her. He worked as a street car conductor for a year or so before they married. After they married in 1916, they lived on Gertrude's family dairy farm.
He took a job in Purcellville with the Loudoun Light and Power Company, working his way up to manager. He was kept quite busy between the demands of operating a farm and his full-time job with the power company.
After his wife's passing in 1957 from a heart attack, he moved in with his daughter and her family who lived next door, selling the farm house, barn and a few acres. He kept most of the farm acreage, leasing it out to another dairy farm. In the winter months, he would return to Eastpoint, staying in the original family home where three of his siblings continued to live. Around 1959-60, he permanently moved to Eastpoint.
He became reacquainted with and started courting an old high school flame, Gertrude (Gertie) Harms, who accepted his offer of marriage. They married in Carmel CA. They lived in Sopchoppy FL. Gertie brought much happiness back into his life for the last 5 years of his life.
