George B. Looney, 88, of 501 N. Meadow Drive, died Sunday evening February 8, 2009 at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center.

Mr. Looney began working at Stover, Butler & Murphy Agency as a certified public accountant. In 1958 he and his wife moved to Ogdensburg, where he became a partner in the Whalen, Davey & Looney CPA firm until his retirement in 1988.

Born April 15, 1920, in Oswego, son of George B. and Catherine McHenry Looney, he graduated from Oswego High School in 1937 and continued his education at Rochester Business Institute until 1940. He served in the Marine Corps from 1942 to 1946 as a first lieutenant in the Pacific theater during World War II, and continued with the Marine Corps Reserve as a captain until 1960. He received an accounting degree from Canisius College, Buffalo, in 1950.

He married Marjorie Herriman on June 21, 1947, at St. Paul's Church, Oswego. She died Sept. 10, 2002.

Mr. Looney was treasurer and secretary of the Ogdensburg Lions Club and later became a District 20W Lions Club zone chairman, also serving as secretary for the cabinet governor. He received the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award in 2005 and the Lion of the Year Award in 1967-68. He was a past Chamber of Commerce president, was honorary co-chairman of the Ogdensburg Expo in 2004 and was on the board of directors for the Ogdensburg Boys & Girls Club from 1965 to 2006.

He was a third-degree and life member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of Elks Lodge 772, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Marine Corps League. He volunteered and coached St. Mary's Academy Athletic Association teams for 12 years and was a member of St. Mary's Academy school board and parish council.

He was chairman for 13 years, and an active board member for 28 years, of the Ogdensburg Bridge & Port Authority, where he received recognition for his dedication with the naming of the George B. Looney Airfield at the Ogdensburg Airport.

He enjoyed fishing, golfing, bowling, officiating basketball in the Northern League and serving as commissioner and volunteer for biddy basketball.

Surviving are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Michael, and his fiancée, Marita Lewis, Morristown, and P. Thomas and Linda, Irondequoit; a daughter, Mary Durr, Ogdensburg; a sister, Margaret "Colette" Holler, Anderson, S.C.; a brother, John, Chatsworth, N.J.; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Two brothers, Howard and Charles; a son-in-law, John Durr, and two grandchildren died before him.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Cathedral with Monsignor Harry K. Snow officiating. Entombment will be in Foxwood Memorial Park.

Calling hours will be private.

Donations may be made to the Ogdensburg Boys & Girls Club.
