Catherine Eliza Curtiss Walker Canright was the oldest child of Jared Russell Curtiss, known as Russell (Jan. 17, 1805 MA - Dec. 6, 1890 MI) and Lydia Clark Potter Curtiss (Feb. 25, 1811 OH - Apr. 12, 1905 MI). Her father was a farmer. Somewhere between 1849 and 1853, Catherine's family moved from Ohio to Michigan.

Catherine had several siblings:
Sarah Rebecca Curtiss, Apr. 6, 1833 OH - Dec. 21, 1915 MI
Lucy Ann Curtiss, May 5, 1835 OH - 1912
Sheldon Russell Curtiss, Apr. 22, 1839 OH - Feb. 9, 1924 MI
Mariah L. Curtiss, Feb. 27, 1842 OH - Apr. 15, 1889 MI
Corinthia M. Curtiss, Mar. 26, 1846 OH - Jan. 19, 1907 MI
William Herbert Curtiss, Aug. 27, 1853 MI - 1930

In Ohio in September of 1849, Catherine married a man named Delos Robert Walker. She had three children from this marriage:

Jerome Russell Elwood Walker, Feb. 7 1856 MI - Jan. 10, 1929 MI
Morell Robert Walker, June 1, 1858 MI - Feb. 3, 1903 NE
Warren Adelbert Walker, Aug. 21, 1861 MI - Nov. 21, 1945 MI

Catherine's husband Delos disappeared and was presumed drowned. Later evidence (undated Michigan news article) stated he had married another woman, stolen money, and disappeared again.

By 1860, Catherine was residing, along with her two sons, back at home with her parents. Also in the home were Sheldon, Corinthia, and William. Presumably, Sarah, Lucy, and Mariah had married and left the family home, although this has not yet been researched.

At this time, just two farms down, lived Lester Joel Canright, his wife Phoebe, and their children Milton Eugene, age 10, Edward, age 7, and Mary Elizabeth (Lebbie), age 4. The entire family had been born in New York. (Also in their care was a young man named John Pratt, age 14, born in Michigan). On Feb. 1, 1862, Phoebe had twins, Clifton W. and Hattie G. Canright. Sadly, Clifton died Sept. 21 of that same year, and Hattie died Feb. 13 of the following year, 1863. The causes of their deaths are unknown. Phoebe followed them in death June 9, 1863. The cause of her death is also unknown.

Later that year, on Sept. 13, 1863, Catherine Walker married Lester Joel Canright, blending their families. Although all three of Catherine's sons by Delos Walker lived to adulthood, the 1870 United States Federal Census names only Morell Robert Walker as living in the Canright household. More research will be done on this.

Catherine and Lester Joel are believed to have had six children:

Florence "Florrie" Gertrude Canright, July 3, 1864 - July 31, 1870
Frances "Franc" Mae Canright Sprague, Dec. 15, 1866 - June 10, 1926
Hattie Avenello Canright, Feb. 5, 1868 - Nov. 12, 1869 (drowned)
Clifton Lester Canright, April 22, 1871 - April 29, 1946
Hattie A. Canright, Jan. 15, 1873 - Feb. 1873
Hattie Gertrude Canright, Jan. 14, 1874 - March 4, 1874

Only two of Catherine's children with Lester Joel lived to adulthood.

Lester's remaining daughter from his first marriage, Lebbie, died Feb. 11, 1872. She was almost 16; Catherine had been her mother since Lebbie was four years old. Lebbie died of consumption.

Lester's oldest living son, Eugene, died Dec. 16, 1878, at the age of 27. He was married and had one child and Catherine had been his mother since Eugene was 12 years old. He was a farmer, and he died when the old well he was cleaning caved in, burying him 20 feet deep.

According to her death certificate, Catherine died on Sept. 24, 1913, of a bowel obstruction that was probably malignant.

NOTE: The 1900 census states that Catherine Curtiss was the mother of a total of eight children, not nine. Varying records indicate that Lester Joel named four, possibly five, daughters "Hattie." None lived past the age of two. The error regarding the number of Catherine's children may be related to this, and more research is being done.
