Retired Soldier and Company Director.
He was the second son of Mr. William MARTIN, of Ramelton, County Donegal, for many years Crown Solicitor for County Donegal.
George's mother was a daughter of Very Revd. George BELLIS DD, minister of Alfred Street Presbyterian Church, Belfast and in 1877 Moderator of the General Assembly.
George was educated at Royal Belfast Acedemical Institution. He served with the Royal Marines before being commissioned into the Oxford and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. During the First World War he served in Mesopotania. At the end of the war he became adjutant of the Manchester Regiment from which he retired with the rank of Major.
In 1916, during the First World War he was Temporary Captain in the Ox and Bucks Light Infantry when he was awarded the Military Cross (MC) for conspicious gallantry during an action.
The citation read as follows "...He re-organised a captured position with great courage and skill. Later he rendered valuable assistance during an enemy counter attack".
Before the war he was a director of the Braidwater Weaving Company, Ballymena, County Antrim.
In August 1915 he married Ethel May PORTER, the eldest daughter of Mr. R. R. PORTER the manager of the Ulster Bank, Ballymena.
He was ordained to eldership in the Malone congregation, Belfast and was a member of Session. When he later moved to Londonderry he was co opted an elder of Glendermott Presbyterian Church in March 1957.
Although previously married to a lady called PORTER, he was survived by his current wife, Dorothy STEWART, daughter of the late Rev. David STEWART MA, for many years minister at Muckamore.
He had one son, Mr. R. K. MARTIN MA, Edinburgh, Scotland and two sisters, Misses Maud and Mary MARTIN.
George died at Magheracannon, Newbuildings, Londonderry.
