E. C. BARTO DIES FOLLOWING FALL

Faithful Employe of Observer Has Fatal Accident.

Fell on South Tryon Street, and Fractured Skull, Dying Within Few Moments.

Falling to the pavement about noon Monday in front of the store of Kenneth Campbell & Son, 408 South Tryon street, when attempting to raise an umbrella in the fact of a strong wind, Edmund C. Barto, 67 years of age, sufferered injury to his head and died within a few moments. Mr. Barto for the past two years has been a faithful employe of The Observer, efficiently and conscientiously fulfilling his position as collector.

Whether Mr. Bartos death resulted directly from the injury to his head or whether it resulted from a heart attack or a stroke of paralysis was not officially determined. He was walking up the street in the face of a strong wind and fell to the pavement when he made an effort to raise an umbrella. A number of persons saw him fall and hurried to his assistance. they found him unconscious, and blood flowing freely from a gash on the back of his head. He was taken into the Kenneth Campbell & Son store and medical aid was summoned, but Mr. Barto died within a few moments, before a doctor could reach the scene. The body was removed immediately to the undertaking parlors of Z. A. Hovis & Son.

It was learned that Mr. Barto suffered a stroke of paralysis some years ago and it is thought possible that his fatal fall was brought on by a recurrence of the affliction.

Funeral arrangements are pending the arrival of a son, Dr. P. S. Barto, a professor of the Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh, Pa., at 10:20 o'clock tonight. However, it is thought probable that the funeral will be conducted Wednesday and that interment will be in Elmwood cemetery. Besides a son the deceased is survived by his widow, who before marriage was Miss Elizabeth Stephens.

Mr. Barto moved to Charlotte from the middle west about seven or eight years past, on account of the better climate. He had moved to the middle west from New York, where he was born and educated. He attended Ithaca academy, Ithaca, N. Y., and Cornell university. For a period he was an instructor in Cornell, it was learned yesterday.

On first coming to Charlotte Mr. Barto became connected with the county school system as a teacher. He later went into farming. Two years ago he went to work for The Observer, which position he held until the time of his death. He was loved and esteemed by his fellow workers.

Mr. Barto, before coming to Charlotte, had taught in the public schools of northern cities, and had become known as a Shakespearean lecturer and reader.
