Son of Alanson & Jane R. Tarvin Gray.
Married Margaretta Rachel McDowell on Aug. 1, 1850, in Franklin. They had 4 children.
The following was written about him by his granddaughter, Emily Newell:
"He was a distinguished-looking man, tall and slim with the lean, long face of an aristocrat and the high brow of an intellectual with pale-brown coloring that is alluring to women. Years afterward, he was one of the courtliest men I ever meet, Arnold Palmer* said to James Patten Newell, 'To us younger men Mr. Gray was the ideal of what a gentleman should be.'" He was a mechanical engineer and the owner of the E.B.Gray Insurance Company of Franklin, Pennsylvania. He also built several bridges over the Ohio River with his brother, John Tarvin Gray. He and Philander Raymond co-founded the Orleans Furnace in Sugar Creek, Venango County, Pennsylvania in 1848. This business was sold in 1853 to their cousin Wellington Gray Lee.
*Arnold Palmer was a banker in Franklin, Venango County, Pennsylvania.
