Raised in Rome township, farming on his parents' farm, James stood 5' 4 1/2" tall, had auburn hair and blue eyes. The day after his nineteenth birthday, he went to Huntington, enlisted for three years in the United States Army on January 18, 1904, telling them he was twenty-one. After three years service in Company A, 20th Infantry Regiment, at Columbus Barracks, Ohio and other places, he was discharged at the Presidio. he re-enlisted twice, serviing six years in the 11th REcruiting Company, based at Columbus Barracks, being discahrged March 28, 1914. He then was post barber at Columbus Barracks for a number of years. James married later in life to Mrs. Flora Sheppard, and was a barber in Huntington, West Virginia, where they lived on Ohio River River Road.
