Joseph was trying to dig a ground hog out from under a rock when the rock shifted and trapped him. Two of his sons, Albert 7 and John 5 were with him and went for help. By the time help got to him he had died of asphyxiation. Within the family, some members used the spelling Beattey , and others Beatty.

Gravesite Details
The Mt. Ephraim Methodist Cemetery is behind and to one side of the still active church. It is an old cemetery with one of the later (latest?) burials being in the early 1940s. Many stones have fallen and few fallen or standing are readily readable.
