Robert served as a Technical Sergeant & Engineer / Top Turret Gunner on B-17G #44-6328, 345th Bomber Squadron, 97th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Jefferson County, Kentucky prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on January 31, 1942 at Fort Thomas, Newport, Kentucky. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in woodworking and also as Married.

B-17G #44-6328 took off, with a crew of 11, from Amendola Field, Italy on a bombing mission over Fortezza Yards, Italy. On the first bombing run over the target B-17G #44-6328 was hit in the cockpit by ground anti-aircraft causing the B-17 to crash near Fortezza. The entire crew perished.

Robert was "Killed In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.

He was originally interred in Italy and was later repatriated here on December 7, 1949.

Service # 15089687

Son of Mrs. Margaret L. W. Howard who resided in Shively, Kentucky.

The reason he is named on a group headstone is because when soldiers & sailors were killed in close proximity to each other they were unable, at that time, to identify them separately and interred their remains together in one grave.
