Joel Franco Fernandez age 20 of Las Cruces took God's hand Monday, January 13, 2003 at Memorial Medical Center after a long illness. He was born March 21, 1982 in Las Cruces to Gina Franco and Joel Reyes Fernandez. Joel attended Onate High School and received his GED from Dona Ana Branch community College where he had planned to attend next semester. Joel liked to go fishing and enjoyed working on cars. He especially loved the times he spent with his daughter.
Family survivors included his daughter, Jaliene Fernandez of Chicago, IL; mother, Gina Eaton and husband Rod of Las Cruces; father, Joel Reyes Fernandez and wife JoAnn of Las Cruces; maternal grandmother, Josephine M. Franco of Las Cruces; paternal grandparents, Eddie and Rosemary Gamboa of Las Cruces, Richard and Patty Fernandez of Lemitar, NM; step-brothers and sisters, Jenni, Jessica, Jamie, Ryan and Brad Eaton all of Mesa, AZ; uncles and aunts, Sandra Murillo and husband Ted, Lisa Fernandez of Lemitar, NM, Chuck Franco and wife Susan Martinez, Larry Franco and companion Sheryl, Jesus Vasquez and companion Cruz Rodriguez all of Las Cruces; First cousins, Brandy Vasquez of Las Cruces, Samantha Baldonado of Lemitar, NM, Carlo Franco of Las Cruces, Serena Carabajal and husband Rudy of Albuquerque, NM, Eric Franco and wife Leslie of Ft. Rucker, AL.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Fred C. Franco.
Joel's funeral mass was held at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Msgr. John Anderson officiating. The rite of committal followed at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Robert Walters, Joel De La Cruz, Mike Salazar, Adrian, Oscar and James Bustamante. Honorary bearers was Carlo and Eric Franco.
