CUMBERLAND,MARYLAND --- Marie Frances Africa, 74, of Cumberland, went to be with the Lord, Saturday, April 15, 2000, at Memorial Hospital.
Born on Dec. 6, 1925, in Petersburg, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Brosie Whetzel and the late Bertha (Crider) Whetzel-Malone.
Mrs. Africa was a 1945 graduate of Allegany High School. She worked at Peoples Service Drug Stores, Smith's, Rozell's and Shinnamon's Shoe Stores and she was retired from McDonald's Restaurant with nineteen years of service in 1993. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church, Central United Methodist Church Women's Society and the South Cumberland Business and Civic Association.
Surviving are a husband of 53 years, Robert G. Africa, Cumberland; two daughters, Patricia M. Sweitzer and husband Donald, Cumberland, Mary Ellen Ball and husband Rob, Raleigh, N.C.; two grandchildren, Marc Kristopher and Lauren Ashleigh Ball, Raleigh, who were the joy and delight of her life; two step-grandchildren, Donald Sweitzer Jr., Frostburg, Danny Sweitzer, Cumberland; two sisters, Wilda Grusha and husband John, Fredericksburg, Va., Louella Bean and husband Russell, Cumberland; two nieces; and two nephews.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. only.
Services will be conducted on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., with the Rev. Edward Dickel officiating.
Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap.
