Another of our citizens, one who has been a resident of the county for more than one fifth of a century, has passed away in the person of James W. Leatherman. The end came at 4 p.m. Monday at the Stewart Hospital in Hutchinson where he had been taken a week before for treatment for acute internal troubles. Human skill failed to relieve him, and death came only about ten days after the beginning of his ailment.
Mr. Leatherman's earthly career began in Cook County, Illinois and he lived 61 years, 9 months and 15 days. About twenty two years have been spent in Stafford county. He resided north of Stafford until about eleven years ago he moved to near Leesburg and remained there some eight years until moving to St. John about three years ago, and has since resided here. He was a successful farmer and bore a wide acquaintance in the county where he will be much missed by old time neighbors and friends.
He was married to Sarah A. Griffis October 12, 1880, and to them were born thirteen children; three dying in infancy. The wife and ten children survive him. The surviving children are: Mrs. Ed Faulk, Syracuse, Kansas; Mrs Will Dolan, Garden City, Kansas; Mrs Harry Toland, St. John, Kansas; Charles Leatherman, Iuka, Kansas; George Leatherman, Cimarron, Kansas; and five younger children, Iva, Ruby, Verlie, Chester, and Eva.
He united with the U. B. Church several years ago. Rev. Reigel and Rev. Myers, old acquaintances, conducted the funeral this being his request. The service was at the home at 9 a.m. Wednesday, and also at his request, interment was in Bedford cemetery near his early Stafford County home.
