Evin Fortenberry enlisted in the CSA in early 1862. He enlisted 3rd Texas Lancers but they mustered in as the 25th Texas Cavalry. After they were mustered in they were dismounted and the Government later paid them for their mounts. They were posted to Camp Fullalove near
Shreveport.LA. Gilbert Fortenberry, Evin's younger brother had enlisted with him and died of camp fever on 25 August
1862. He is buried somewhere on Fullalove Plantation. By Nov they were posted to Fort Hindman at Arkansas Post. AR.
On Jan 11 1863 they were captured and confined at Camp Butler, Ill.Over 300 of them died of small pox while there. Those that survived were exchanged at City Point VA.
The 24th and 25th were combined and were in Army of TN.They were in action from Chattanooga to Atlanta. Evin was captured again at the Battle of Franklin, TN and was at Camp Douglas, Ill and then was paroled and went Point Lookout Maryland. From there he was in Hospital #9 in Richmond,VA for 30 days
